Yesterday - taking some initial pictures for a forthcoming physical restraint and rigid handcuff training course. Entering into 'front stack' position for compliant subject and then changing to takedown, to re-establish compliance when subject suddenly offers resistance and, or violence.

Further to my post regarding 'Hojōjutsu' (捕縄術 - "Restraining Rope Technique"), including accompanying pictures from Draeger (1974). I should add that the 1987 version of the 'Keisatsu Taiho-jutsu Kyōkasho' (translated into English), shows the suspect having the rope applied around the waist, as opposed to the neck / throat.

Should consideration be give to orientating future police systems towards a more science / evidence-based approach ? so, that they would be informed by the most accurate and up to date sports science, anatomy / physiology and medical research. This might increase efficiency and prevent adverse medical outcomes to supects.
I recenly obtained a copy of Leopold McLaglan's 1922 book entitled 'Police Jui Jitsu'. I believe that this formed the basis, at least in part, for the (London) Metropolitan Police's very practical Self-defence and Arresting techniques, which were taught until 1981.
In 1842 the (U.K.) Home Office rules stated that cutlasses should be made available, if required and were used as late as 1895 to quell a riot in Bisley, Gloucestershire.
In 1992, I had a meeting at Japanese National Police Academy (KeisatsuDai-gakkō 警察大学校) in Tokyo, Japan with Inspector Tateishi Teruo (立石 照雄), Chief Instructor of the Taihojutsu(逮捕術) Police System. I discussed Taihojutsu, was fully briefed, familiarised and provided with manuals and videos of the system.
