Taiho-jutsu Shiai Kara Shinpan Made (逮捕術 試合から審判まで) i.e. Arresting techniques - from basics to matches (1997) - Safety in Training.

Modern Taiho-jutsu in Japan has a competitive element (in protective gear). I have some reservations about this, but as contemporary Japan is a very safe and peaceful country, these competitions may provide some additional motivation through competitive rivalry between police stations and departments.

The following book covers the competitive aspects of Taiho-jutsu. This section is about safety, preparation for and how to conduct Taiho-jutsu classe. It is meticulous, as one would expect:

Safety Management in Training

1 Personnel Management

(1) Trainees' health, technical skills, physical strength, rank, personality, level of participation in training, and medical history should be understood to discover those with training deficiencies. If deemed necessary, trainees should undergo a medical examination by a doctor in advance.

(2) Trainees should be scheduled based on their age, physical strength, and skills, and should be fully prepared.

(3) Trainees should be organised into groups and trained in a controlled manner, taking into consideration the number of trainees, training location, and training content.

(4) Trainees should not be trained in unreasonable or dangerous ways.

(5) Establish a system of guidance and supervision during training, and always keep an eye on the trainees' movements. If any abnormality is found, measures such as halting training should be taken.

(6) Research emergency measures and establish an emergency measures system.

(7) Trainees should be trained according to their skills and faithful to the basics.

(😎 When a person who has not normally participated in training participates in training, he/she should not be forced to do sudden training.

(9) Elderly people should not be allowed to overestimate their physical strength.

2. Physical Management

(1) Dojo and gymnasium floors, tatami mats, floorboards, lighting, lighting, ventilation, ventilation, damp-proofing and fire extinguishing equipment shall be carefully inspected, and if any damage is found, measures or procedures shall be promptly taken to repair or maintain the equipment.

(2) Be sure to inspect equipment, protective gear, etc. regularly or before and after use, and if any abnormality is found, prohibit its use or allow it to be used only after repairs.

P.14

3) Items not necessary for training should be removed from the dojo or gymnasium as much as possible.

(4) In cold regions, pay particular attention to keeping warm during the winter.

(5) Clothing, equipment, and protective gear should be worn or used properly according to the trainee's physique.

3. Management of Training

Training should be managed according to the physical strength, skills, and level of proficiency of the trainee, such as for new recruits, general police officers, and special training personnel.

(1) After trainees have completed a sufficient number of basic warm-up exercises, including stretching, to synchronise their physical functions and enable them to perform at their best, they should undergo repetitive training in ukemi, footwork, body movement, and strength training to improve their flexibility, agility, and endurance.

2) Trainees should master the basics of attack and defence through repeated mutual training of "mae tsuki"(front thrust) and "mae keri" (front kick)

(3) Training in protective gear should be done after checking that they are properly dressed and that they are wearing socks, arrest shoes, hand towels, etc., and after practicing forward and backward turns and ukemi to familiarise the body with the protective gear.

Ukemi (next to illustration)

4)When multiple trainees are trained at the same time, sufficient distance and spacing should be maintained depending on the type and content of the training.

5) When training in "striking" and "reverse techniques," etc., have the instructor demonstrate the location, method, and level of striking, as well as the method of performing (joint) reverse techniques and the evaluation of their effectiveness, and have the trainees understand the limitations before training.
